What’s the best broadhead for black bear hunting?

Asked By Matt ShannonAug 23, 2024

I’m going on a black bear hunt next year I’m torn on what broadhead to use, fixed-blade Muzzy,ย  G5 Mega Meat or a Rage?ย  I shoot 100 grain heads out of a 70 lbs PSE EMBARK bow. Your suggestion would be helpful.

Matt - I haven't personally shot a black bear but I know quite a few folks who have. With your setup you should have no issue shooting any of those broadheads that you mentioned. We have teammates who have shot big black bears (400+ lbs) with mechanical broadheads without an issue. It really comes down to personal preference. Just make sure you're shooting an arrow with a pretty decent amount of weight behind it. I would say minimum of 450 grains, if you can do 500 that would be even better. Most black bear hunts take place at a relatively close distance over bait, so judging yardage on the fly usually isn't an issue.
