I am 69 years old been shooting archery for about 35 years. I used to shoot very well and I’m ok now other than some target panic, which is I can’t hold the pin on the x. Is there anything I can do about that?

Target panic is something that almost all archers will struggle with at some point in their life. Personally speaking, I've been battling target panic on and off for many years and it takes constant practice and awareness to keep it at bay. A few things have helped me through the years. 1. When I feel myself starting to struggle, I stop shooting for a bit rather than trying to fight my way through it. I've found that trying to push through often just makes my problems worse. Taking a break and coming back later that day, or even the next day, helps me mentally reset myself and can often set me back on the right track. 2. Focus on aiming drills without shooting. When I struggle with getting my pin on target I will go through some aiming drills where I draw back, hold on the target, and then let down. My focus is on the process of aiming and not shooting. The nice thing about this is you can do it indoors if you want. 3. Blank bailing. This is the process of drawing back, closing your eyes, and focusing on the execution of your shot without the worry of your aiming point. Be sure to do this up close to your target so you don't miss. But again, it takes away the anxiety of trying to aim and shoot at the same time. 4. When all else fails, give Joel Turner's ShotIQ course a look! It's done wonders for many archers and shooters struggling with various forms of target panic.
